Nine gray blocks, nine tall black letters, and a whole neighborhood of trouble spelling out HALLOWEEN. A cat in a candy corn hat has climbed into somebody's boot, an owl minds the A, a raven stands watch over a lit candle and a skeleton key beside the year 1803, and one very pleased ghost has burst straight up out of a jack-o-lantern. The appliqué runs pumpkin orange, moss green, and inky black against soft mottled grays, like fog rolling in at dusk. Over all of it runs Haunted Web: spiderwebs stitched in long angled spokes and connecting arcs that stretch corner to corner and leave the whole quilt looking like an attic nobody has swept since, well, 1803. Dark gray thread keeps the webs hushed on the gray and faintly ghostly on the black. The border is black scattered with tiny orange sprigs, berries picked in the dark.
